FERTILITY & ASSISTED REPRODUCTION

More than five million people of childbearing age in the US experience infertility, yet it is rarely discussed. Not talking about it makes it hard to recognize infertility as a disease, to get good information and to find support.  With assistance, two thirds of those struggling with infertility ultimately do give birth. Even so, getting psychological support can make the process much more manageable, help to strengthen relationships, and studies suggest it can even increase success rates of Assisted Reproduction Technology (ART).

Many couples find their sexual relationship is negatively affected by difficulties trying to conceive, introducing stress and feelings of inadequacy to what may have been a strong sexual bond.  Assisted reproductive technology treatments can feel intrusive and physically uncomfortable. Many feel alone and isolated. I offer infertility groups in addition to individual and couple sessions.

According to RESOLVE, the National Infertility Association, the infertility experience can be a major life crisis involving many hidden losses for individuals, their loved ones, and society as a whole, including:

• Loss of a genetic legacy and loss for future contributing citizens of the next generation
• Loss of the pregnancy and birth experience
• Loss of the parenting experience
• Loss of a grandparenting relationship
• Loss of feelings of self-worth
• Loss of stability in family and personal relationships
• Loss of work productivity
• Loss of a sense of spirituality and sense of hope for the future

As a psychologist and professional member of RESOLVE, I am committed to working with women, men, and couples on the emotional rollercoaster of the fertility process. Some are just trying to conceive and are processing the meaning of this stage of life. Others are exploring both holistic & traditional medical assistance for fertility, or are actively involved in ART treatments such as in vitro fertilization (IVF). Some are faced with the unique psychological and practical issues that accompany oocyte (egg) or sperm donation or surrogacy.  Still others are exploring child-free living or alternatives such as adoption. Wherever you are, you can find a knowledgeable source of support and understanding as you navigate your unique journey.
