WHAT IS FORENSIC PSYCHOLOGY?

Forensic psychology is the science of psychology used to answer questions of interest to the legal system. This may be in relation to a civil action or a crime.   The word forensic comes from the Forum in ancient Rome, where legal matters were decided.  Forensic evaluation refers to comprehensive psychological evaluation relevant to the legal profession.  Attorneys and judges call upon psychologists during legal proceedings to give objective and comprehensive psychological evaluations and to provide expert witness testimony on specific areas of psychology.

Dr. Arutt has developed an expertise in forensic evaluations and has served as an expert witness in various forensic matters. Since 1995, in association with Barbara Cort Counter Ph.D., Inc. and Associates, Dr. Arutt has worked with both the defense and the prosecution for State and Federal criminal cases.  In civil cases (lawsuits) Dr. Arutt provides comprehensive psychological evaluations to assess the impact of an event on those involved, and provides expert testimony.

Typical forensic issues that have been a part of Dr. Arutt’s practice are:

  • Civil Litigation: psychological trauma resulting from torts, personal injury, childhood abuse, sexual abuse/trauma; PTSD
  • Criminal matters: Defendant psychological evaluations, psychological sentencing evaluations, competency to stand trial
  • Expert witness testimony

Upon request, a phone consultation can be arranged with your attorney to discuss your forensic psychology needs.
